There are so many cell phones to choose from it can be overwhelming to decide on the right one for you. In fact, the best place to start is to decide what features are the most important to you. For instance, if you are buying a phone for your grandparent that it is an easier choice. Stick with a basic phone. I would probably choose one that has text capabilities just in case. For the most part, grandparents in generally will not be interested in all the bells and whistles. They will not download ringtones, movies, games and other applications. On the other hand, if you are in need of a phone than I would recommend taking enough time to figure out what features you are searching for. Features such as text, movies, TV, gps and more are available making some of today's phones like small mini-computers. Not to mention, you may download applications such as ringtones, movies, games, GPS and an entire compliment of different applications. Once you determine the features you must have. The next consideration is determining the type of phone.

There are many types of cell phones. There are bar phones, flip phones, smartphones and phones with qwerty keyboards attached. Bar phones seem to be the sturdiest but tend to have smaller screens. Flip phones may not be as sturdy but the screen is protected and the number keys are less prone to accidentally being activated. Phones with keyboards attached give you the benefit of having a computer keyboard attached to the phone. These phones have larger screens and are great for games and video. Smartphones also have larger screens and are great for games and video and have the capabilities of a mini computer. Now that you have the features and type of phone it is time to decide what carrier you will need.

Some other features are included here for informational purposes. Some standard features include caller ID, phone book with fast dial, call waiting, voice mail and auto-answering. Some also have other added features like your first incoming minute free. The high-end cell phones will have voice-activated dialing, SMS, 2-way paging, games, scheduling calendars, digital organizer and all the standard features. The main thing is to see what fits into your life style best and also to be sure when and if the features expire.

There are many brands of phones. To make sure that your cell phone comparisons are complete look at Nokia cell phones, Ericsson cell phones, Sprint cell phones, Motorola cell phones and Samsung cell phones. Research the different free cell phone offers, prepaid cell phones and service plans from brand names like AT&T

There are Regional and national carriers. Regional carriers like metro PCS offers, basic services for a lower monthly fee. Of course Sprint just added Boost that gives you a simple plan that is lower. Currently two of the largest networks Sprint and Verizon is on a network that is called CDMA. We only mention this because CDMA networks phones do not port as easily as gdma. In other words, if you travel to other countries you probably want to be on a GSM network. Than depending on the number of bands your phone has will determine what countries they will also work in. Just like anything else, do your homework for the type of carrier you will need. Keep in mind grandma's phone may be added for less to a family plan.

Choosing the correct plan is also important. The more the features the more your monthly service and cost of the phone will be. In other words, if you do not plan on ever using a particular feature or service, than do not be led into purchasing it. Why add all the bells and whistles to granddaddy's phone when all they are going to do is make a phone call when they travel.

Finally, there are accessories that can be added to your phone purchase. Items like data cables to sync with your computer may not come with the phone. Cases, extra batteries and car charges are all recommended purchases. I typically always have three charged batteries with me. They are so small today that I can easily place them in my pocket. (One in the phone and two in my pocket) The phone generally comes with a wall charger but we recommend at least the purchase of a case and car charger. Anything else will be determined to the features of the phone.
